BERLIN -- As one of their concluding group activities in Germany, more than 360 2014 – 2015 American CBYX participants met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. The Chancellor gave a speech in which she expressed her fond opinion of the CBYX program, as well as her understanding of the important experiences that the students had during their time in Germany. The students discussed their experiences in German high schools and with their host families, and expressed that their new connections with their host communities made it difficult to leave.
“When she arrived, some people really freaked out, and a few even cried,” reflected Anna from New York. Two CBYX students, Jacob from Pennsylvania and Dale from New Jersey, received a personal audience with Chancellor Merkel. James, a student from Florida, gave a musical performance upon request from the Bundestag, and the student audience and the Chancellor enjoyed his performance.
