CBYX 2015 – 2016 participant Murod K., reflects on his time in Germany with the CBYX program thus far.
There are no combinations or permutations of words that could even remotely construe the growth and lessons I’ve experienced from my year with CBYX. It has been the most electric, inspiring, confusing, and enlivening undertaking in my entire life. There were definitely certain junctures of my exchange that forced me to think beyond my perceived abilities; some which I just laughed off, but many which will stay with me for the rest of my life. However, just as I found (and struggled) through my personal narratives about the deeply complex nature and etiquette of the German culture and its people, I also had the opportunity to delve deeply into the peculiar and admirable aspects of German culture, as well. At these specific moments of my exchange year, I would always remember a quote that my liaison always told me, which goes something like this: “It’s is not good, it’s not bad, it’s just different.” I actually laugh sometimes now because when I first heard this quote in Washington, D.C. at the beginning of my exchange, I thought that it was the cheesiest quote I ever heard. Not until later, after I dredged and unearthed the deeper parts of the German culture, like the love for carbonated water or the value of family, did I finally understand the importance of the quote.
However, the lessons I’ve learned and the experiences that I’ve had simply cannot be explained or echoed in a way that portrays how much CBYX has meant to me. To be honest, the only way to find out is, of course, to do it yourself and experience this year just like I did. But trust me, participating in CBYX will be the best and the most enlightening moments of your life, and you will come back from it with tons of international friends and family, knowledge of another culture and language, as well as a deep appreciation for our beautiful and astonishing world. Believe me when I say this because you will never forget this moment in your life.
